Juno AI: A Safe, AI-Powered Mental Health Chatbot for Teens
Introduction: Juno AI is a revolutionary AI-powered chatbot designed specifically for teenagers to provide mental health support. Juno was inspired by my own personal experiences navigating the emotional and social challenges of being a teenager. Juno offers a safe space for teens to express their feelings, seek advice, and receive guidance on managing everyday stressors, from school pressures to social struggles. It’s a tool built with the unique needs of teens in mind, providing instant support in moments of need.
The Crisis in Teenage Mental Health: With rising levels of stress, anxiety, and depression among teens, many struggle to find a comfortable outlet to express themselves. Social media pressures, academic deadlines, and interpersonal issues can feel overwhelming, yet traditional support systems like therapy might not always be accessible or comfortable for everyone. Juno aims to fill this gap by offering a non-judgmental, accessible platform that understands the unique struggles of today’s youth.
Why Juno? Unlike other mental health chatbots, which are often not tailored to teenagers, Juno is built specifically for the teen experience. Using language that resonates with young people, Juno creates a safe, supportive environment for teens to talk about their feelings. It’s not just another generic chatbot—it’s designed to connect with teens in a way that feels personal and understanding.
How Juno Works: Juno is built on a curated Large Language Model (LLM) that has been trained on trusted mental health resources, teen-specific datasets, and modern teenage language. This enables it to provide relevant, supportive, and empathetic responses to teens, all while feeling like a companion. It’s a chatbot that understands their language, struggles, and emotions, offering guidance on everything from academic stress to relationship problems. Juno is built on python and our first prototype is currently being run with Chainlit.
The chatbot works by processing input in a way that feels natural and supportive. It’s not based on unpredictable generative AI, meaning it won’t produce harmful, inaccurate, or triggering responses. By using ethical AI practices and training on reliable data, Juno ensures that every conversation remains helpful, safe, and grounded in sound mental health principles.
Safety & Ethical Considerations: The platform is designed to prevent the generation of harmful or misleading advice, ensuring that teens receive reliable and thoughtful responses. Importantly, Juno is not a replacement for professional therapy, but a companion that offers comfort, coping strategies, and emotional support. It encourages users to seek professional help when needed and promotes overall mental well-being.
Why Juno Matters: Teens today face an unprecedented level of pressure. Juno provides a vital resource that helps teens feel heard, supported, and understood, giving them a voice in a world that often feels isolating. With Juno, no teen ever has to feel alone in their struggles. Whether they’re navigating school stress, social challenges, or personal anxiety, Juno is there to offer instant support—anytime, anywhere.
To evaluate whether a chatbot specialized in teenage mental health offers a greater impact than a general AI chatbot, I have designed a four-day experiment. In this experiment, participants will interact with two different chatbots over the course of four days. On two of the days, they will interact with a regular, general AI chatbot, while on the other two days, they will engage with a chatbot specifically designed to address teenage mental health.
Social Experiment:
Each participant will receive an email every day with a link to the chatbot for that day. The link will switch between the two chatbots daily, without the participant’s knowledge of which chatbot they are interacting with. After engaging with the chatbot for 5-10 minutes, participants will be asked to complete a brief survey. The survey will assess key factors such as empathy, emotional intelligence, and overall comfort during the interaction.
This experiment aims to determine whether a chatbot tailored specifically for teenagers can provide more meaningful, supportive, and empathetic interactions compared to a general chatbot, and whether this specialized approach can have a positive effect on the emotional well-being of teenagers.
- This study is currently in the process of being organized and developed as we recruit more participants and finalize the study chatbots → the final results with be published at the end, along with a final research paper
